1.What Is It?

L-Carnitine L-Tartrate (LCLT) is a form of L-carnitine that combines a salt of L-carnitine bound to tartaric acid. L-Carnitine L-Tartrate absorbs more rapidly than L-Carnitine when taken orally, making it useful for time critical situations like before cardio activity or pre workout.

 In free-form supplements L-Carnitine L-Tartrate is sometimes abbreviated to LCLT and is found in many pre workout, fat loss and testosterone booster supplements.  

2.What Does It Do?

L-Carnitine L-Tartrate helps your body produce energy. In particular, it helps your body shuttle fatty acids from stored body fat into the mitochondria of muscle cells where it can be used for energy. This results in an increase in the use of stored body fat for energy (also known as increased fat metabolism).

L-Carnitine L-Tartrate has also been shown to increase nitric oxide levels and reduce markers of muscular damage following anaerobic exercise such as bodybuilding training, powerlifting or crossfit. Specifically L-Carnitine L-Tartrate enhances the oxygenation of muscle when oxygen is lacking, and subsequently improves recovery from anaerobic exercise.

Recent studies suggest that supplementing with L-Carnitine L-Tartrate can upregulate the content of  androgen receptor (AR), the main mediator on the influence of testosterone on muscle protein synthesis.  Therefore LCLT may enhance testosterone uptake through reduced muscle damage and increased availability of androgen receptor. 

3.When Do I Take It?

To take advantage of the suggested fat metabolising and muscle sparing properties of L-Carnitine L-Tartrate, it is best taken 15 - 30 minutes before exercise. L-Carnitine L-Tartrate can be mixed with water, or with any other type of supplement, and consumed. The most efficacious dose is 2 – 3 grams per serve.

4.How Long Does It Take To Work?

L-Carnitine L-Tartrate starts working as soon as it enters the bloodstream, which is typically 15 – 30 minutes after consumption. Users can expect to experience an increase in mental alertness, concentration and mental focus within this timeframe. Consistent use in conjunction with a sensible diet and workout regime will see reduction in stored body fat and maintained muscle size within the first 2 weeks of use.
